Correspondence with Baylor University

Follow the conversation that H.J.L. Stark and Earl B. Smyth, Baylor University football manager, had through letters and telegrams as they determine and negotiate for their football game on November 5, 1910, at Baylor University's Carroll Field.

February 6, 1910

A three-page letter from Earl B. Smyth to H.J.L. Stark inquiring about playing a football game with the University of Texas in Waco in early November.  Smyth includes that if they are not able to come to an agreement on his proposition, Baylor would be glad to meet Texas at Houston during the carnival or Dallas during the fair.

Letter from H.J.L. Stark to Earl B. Smyth offering to play a football game with Baylor in Waco on Texas's trip back from Oklahoma football game.  Stark offers a date of November 9th for the football game.

April 3, 1910

A two-page letter from Earl B. Smyth to H.J.L. Stark stating he his glad that Texas is able to stop at Waco for a football game, offers November 12th as a possible date, and offers a $250 cash guarantee for the game.

May 1, 1910

Telegram from Earl B. Smyth to H.J.L. Stark stating he has not heard a reply from Stark and is anxious for a response so that he can close the schedule.

May 18, 1910

A two-page letter from Earl B. Smyth to H.J.L. Stark stating he hasn't heard a response from Stark and wanted to know which date, November 5th or 9th.  Smyth suggests that the football game is on November 5th due to better attendance which would give Texas a more profitable game if Stark chooses to take 50% of net receipts.

A two-page letter from Earl B. Smyth to H.J.L. Stark stating that Smyth is sending Stark two modified contracts with corrections to Texas receiving 50% of net receipts instead of gross receipts and the amount to be paid if the football game is forfeited.
