James Braddock
James Braddock, known as “Cinderella Man” was born in New York City on June 7, 1905. His journey from humble, local fighter to world class boxer inspired his nickname. With his powerful right hook, Braddock turned pro in 1926, and enjoyed success against fighters such as Pete Latzo and Jimmy Slattery. But as the stock market nosedived in 1929, Braddock’s success also declined.
It was not until 1934 that Braddock’s prospects changed. He strung together a series of wins against various boxers and earned himself a chance to fight Max Baer for the heavyweight title. Braddock won the fight in fifteen rounds and was world champion from 1935 until 1937, when he lost to Joe Louis. In 1938, Braddock retired from his 15 year career, during which he won 51 out of 85 fights. He died in 1974. Braddock’s success earned him an induction into the Boxing Hall of Fame in 2001.
