Abe Goldstein
Born on September 10, 1898, Abraham “Abe” Goldstein hailed from New York City. He became a professional fighter in 1916 and enjoyed a string of victories early on in his career, having lost only one of his first forty matches. In 1921, Goldstein fought for the flyweight championship and lost to Johnny Buff. The following year, again poised to win the title, Goldstein faltered against Pancho Villa.
Finally, in 1924, Goldstein redeemed himself against Joe Lynch to claim the bantamweight title. Despite defending the title twice, he only held the title for a total of nine months; he lost his claim to the championship to Eddie “Cannonball” Martin late in 1924. Until his retirement in 1927, Goldstein fought against many of the top bantamweight boxers. He passed away in 1977.
