Jack Britton
Hailing from Clinton, New York, Jack Britton was born on October 14, 1885. His boxing career began in small clubs in Milwaukee and Chicago in 1904. Britton showed much promise as a fighter, and his career flourished under trainer Don Morgan. In 1915, Britton faced Ted Lewis in the welterweight championship match. Britton lost the match, and Ted Lewis remained an archrival for Britton, who would face Lewis in twenty fights over the course of his career. Britton triumphed against Lewis in 1916 to claim the welterweight title. Britton went on to win the title again in 1919 and held it until 1922.
Britton later faced Benny Leonard and then Mickey Walker in championship matches, but never again clenched the title. Britton continued fighting until 1929, having fought a total of 344 bouts with 104 victories. He mentored young boxers in New York City until his death in 1922. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990.
